Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar reveals an interesting reason why Pakistan used to face defeat by India in the ICC events. He opined why Pakistan lost the match to India in the 1999 World Cup in the group stages before making it to the final of the coveted tournament.
According to Akhtar, Pakistan team were under high pressure because which was then hyped by the media. Speaking in a show The Greatest Rivalry on Star Sports, Akhtar explained why Pakistan looked less confident while facing the Men in Blue.
“We, as Pakistan team, used to play against India, why don’t you just play it as a normal match? We had come (into the 1999 World Cup) beating India in ODIs as well as Tests in their backyard. Just the added pressure of the World Cup as well as the huge hype. Pakistan team used to get pressurized by that hype. This hype was created by TV (media) and we all used to watch TV,” said Akhtar.

“Sachin played me the best during the 199 Wolrd Cup”- Shoaib Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar had one of the greatest rivalries with India legend Sachin Tendulkar. Akhtar feels that while many batsmen stopped moving their feet against him, Tendulkar played him well in the 1999 World Cup.
“This Pakistan team used to get to the ground against India with unnecessary pressure. We even choked in the 2003 World Cup. But Sachin played me the best during the 1999 World Cup. All the other batters were scared of me at that time. Many batters of the world used to stop moving their feet against me,” the 47-year-old said.
India will soon face Pakistan in the Asia Cup in August 28 and it will be interesting to watch one of the arch-rivals of the sport clash against each other.
