KL Rahul returned to the Indian team after a long injury and Covid-19 that kept him out of the recent series against West Indies. Three spinners include Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi. The two wicket-keeper batters are Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik while among all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be there. Among the standbys are Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar.

Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the series due to back injury. But Mohammed Shami’s exclusion raised lots of eye brows. One of them is former India selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Notably, since last year’s World Cup, Shami had not played the shortest format in India.

“In my team, Shami was literally there. If I was the Chairman of the selection committee, I think Shami would have been there and probably, I would not have gone with Ravi Bishnoi. But I still believe Axar Patel was a serious contender in my team. It would have been a big toss-up between Axar Patel and Ashwi,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ show ‘Follow the Blues’.

Asia Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (Capt ), KL Rahul (VC), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, R Pant (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Jadeja, R Ashwin, Y Chahal, R Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan.
