The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for Asia Cup 2022 on Monday, August 8. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are set to return while the latter will act as deputy for the tournement. Rohit Sharma will captain the side which will open their stint in the tournament’s against arch-rivals Pakistan on August 27. The Men in Blue won’t get the services of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as he is ruled out of the high-profile tournament due to back injury.
Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav are the two batting options while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan will lead the pace department in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. Death overs specialist Harshal Patel has been ruled out due to injury.
“Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were not available for selection owing to injuries. They are currently undergoing rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru,” shared BCCI in a separate note.

KL Rahul returned to the Indian team after a long injury and Covid-19 that kept him out of the recent series against West Indies. Three spinners include Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi. The two wicket-keeper batters are Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik while among all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be there. Among the standbys are Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar.
Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the series due to back injury. But Mohammed Shami’s exclusion raised lots of eye brows. One of them is former India selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Notably, since last year’s World Cup, Shami had not played the shortest format in India.
“In my team, Shami was literally there. If I was the Chairman of the selection committee, I think Shami would have been there and probably, I would not have gone with Ravi Bishnoi. But I still believe Axar Patel was a serious contender in my team. It would have been a big toss-up between Axar Patel and Ashwi,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ show ‘Follow the Blues’.
