Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi made a befitting comeback to Test cricket as the left-arm pacer bagged three important wickets in the first inning of the first Test against Sri Lanka. With these three wickets, Afridi leapfrogged India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah on the list of most wickets in the World Test Championship.

As Afridi took his WTC wickets tally to 80 in his 21st Test match, he went past Bumrah who has 79 wickets in 20 Tests at an average of 22.05. Shaheen Afridi averages 25.08 in 34 innings.

The Pakistan pacer stands a chance to leave behind two more Indian bowlers- Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami. While Jadeja has 81 wickets in 25 matches, Mohammed Shami has 85 wickets in 45 innings of 24 Tests.

The leading wicket-taker in WTC history is Australia’s, Nathan Lyon. The off-spinner has claimed a massive 155 wickets in 36 Tests played since the inception of the tournament in 2019. Ravichandran Ashwin is second on the list with 144 wickets in 28 matches. The Indian off-spinner will have a chance to leave Lyon behind when India takes on West Indies in the second Test. Interestingly, there are only four spinners in the top fifteen highest wicket-takers in WTC.
