On 28th January, West Indies completed a miracle as they beat Australia at the Gabba. It was their first Test in Australia since 1997 and they managed to draw the series 1-1. West Indies were the 2nd touring team since 1986 to win at Gabba.
The architect of their win was Shamar Joseph. The pacer had picked up a toe injury while batting on the third day after Mitchell Starc hit his toe with a yorker. Forced to retire hurt, Joseph returned on the fourth day and bowled 12 overs on the trot. In those twelve overs he picked up 7 wickets, which helped them to win the Test by eight runs.
Talking about the Test, Pat Cummins admitted that West Indies had completely outplayed them. He admitted that going into the game they were very confident, but the visitors had different plans. Cummins then declared that despite the loss, he was happy with the result as a Test cricket fan and was now looking forward for their Test series with New Zealand.
They've been fantastic, they created a couple of new superstars that we didn't know about before the series and as a cricket fan, as a Test-match cricket fan, there's a part of me that was happy to watch.Pat Cummins on the West Indies victory
West Indies had named seven uncapped players for their tour of Australia, out of which four played in the series and had important roles in the victory. West Indies will play their next series in July, where they tour England. Australia meanwhile will travel to neighbors New Zealand in February for a 2-match Test series.
West Indies captain claims West Indies needs to play more Tests to become Test giants
In the second half of the 20th century, West Indies were regarded as one of the best Test teams in the world. Their pacers were feared thanks to their lethality and batters were as elegant as ever.
It is no secret that the once formidable Test team has now become a mere shadow of their past. Currently they are ranked 8th in the MRF ICC Test Rankings, below teams like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indian captain, claimed the Test team has talent available to win Tests. But the only way that was possible was if the Team played more Tests, citing how their next Test is now 6 months away. West Indies last won a Test series barely a year ago, when they beat Zimbabwe 1-0.
