During the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy, Pat Cummins had to travel back home to Australia to stay with his mother, Maria, who was battling cancer. She was in palliative care during her last moments and Cummins returned home to be by her side. She sadly passed away on the 10th of March.
A few months later, Cummins led Australia to their 6th World Cup title, by beating India by 6 wickets in the finals. Upon returning home, he was interviewed by ABC Sports, where they spoke about his mother.
In the interview he spoke about how he needed to leave India. Cummins spoke about the time he showed her a video of a member of the Barmy Army playing “Maria” from the West Side Story in tribute for her. He said she loved it, calling it a special moment and showing what sport can do. He said the respect and love from their biggest rivals was special.
I think about her every day; she’s seen a lot of successes before this year, and she’s a huge part of who I am, and I’m sure she would have been really proudPat Cummins to ABC Sport
Cummins then spoke about how he remembered his mother every single day during the World Cup, happy that she was there during his other successes as a cricketer. He also added that if his mother were alive today, she would have been really proud.
Grand celebration of the World Cup triumph planned by Cricket Australia
As most of the 15 players were not present in Australia after their World Cup triumph, there wasn’t a huge celebration. Many stayed back in India as they needed to play in the 5-match T20I series.
But now a celebration has been planned by the CA, which will be held before the start of the 1st Test against Pakistan on 14th December. Due to commitments to their Big Bash League, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa will not be a part of the celebration.
