One of South Africa’s greatest batters, Hashim Alma, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He was playing for Surrey in the County Championship and confirmed to them that he won’t be coming back in the next season to defend the title.

After he retired from international cricket in 2019 (after South Africa’s World Cup campaign in 2019), Amla joined Surrey later that year. He was part of the team in the 2013 and 2014 seasons as an overseas player. Before Surrey, he also played for Derbyshire, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, and Essex.

I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been,” Amla said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. “A sincere thank you to Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players, and Members for their support. The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honor just to be involved with it. I wish them all the best and many more trophies,” he added.

In an illustrious career of two decades, Amla has amassed 34,104 runs across all professional formats. In 124 Tests, he aggregated 9,282 runs and is the second-highest scorer for South Africa after Jacques Kallis. Amla also became the first South African to score a triple century in Test. He was ICC’s top-ranked Test batter in 2013.

His ODI debut came against Bangladesh in 2008. In 181 ODI matches, Amla has amassed 8113 runs at an average of 49.46, including 27 hundred and 39 half-centuries. He is the also fastest batter to score 2000 (40 innings), 3000 (57 innings), 4000 (81 innings), 5000 (101 innings), 6000 (123 innings), 7000 (150 innings), and is the second fastest batter to 8000 runs (176 innings) in ODI cricket. He reached the No.1 spot in ODI ranking in 2010.

In 44 T20Is, the 39-year-old accumulated 1277 runs at a strike rate of 132.05. His highest was an unbeaten 97-run knock.

Amla was also handed the leadership role in ODI and T20 in June 2011. That same year, South Africa became the No. 1 Test team in ICC’s ranking. In 2013, he accepted the Test captaincy too but left it in 2016 after the constant failure of the team as well as a slump in his form. That same year, he stepped down from captaincy.
