South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock to retire from ODIs after 2023 ODI World Cup

South African wicket-keeper, Quinton de Kock, is going to retire from ODIs after the 2O23 ODI World Cup. He had retired from Tests in December 2021 and from now on will only play T20Is for South Africa. 

Quinton de Kock made his ODI debut when he was 20 years old against New Zealand in 2023. Since then he has played over 140 ODI matches, scoring 5966 runs at an average of 44.85. He has played 137 matches as an opener, and has captained the South African side in 8 games.

Quinton de Kock retired from Tests in December 2021 after playing the first Test in India’s tour of South Africa. Since then he has only played white-ball cricket for South Africa. Quinton de Kock says he has only retired from ODI cricket so that he could spend more time with his young family.

South Africa announce squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup

Cricket South Africa on their X account announced their squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The side is captained by Temba Bavuma and includes rising stars like Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee. 

Wayne Parnell missed out due to a shoulder injury and Mumbai Indian stars, Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs, are not in the squad. Sisanda Magala and Maharaj have overcome fitness issues and have returned to the squad. 

Experienced stars like Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Aiden Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi, etc will also be in the squad.

Rob Walter, the head coach of the South African side said, “It’s great having a mix of experienced players and players who will be competing in their first 50-over World Cup. You get that sort of exuberance of excitement to be doing something for the first time.”

South Africa will be playing a 5 match ODI series against Australia to prepare for the World Cup and will then travel to India. Their first match is on 7th October against Sri Lanka. The two sides will play in the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
