After the World Test Championship (WTC) Final snub, Ravichandran Ashwin talked in detail about many topics, some of which looked as if he took a subtle dig at Indian cricket. But one of his remarks about “colleagues” which created a considerable buzz on social media, led to former India head coach Ravi Shastri coming up with a straightforward reaction.

Ashwin, during an exclusive interview with The Indian Express, said how once upon a time teammates used to be friends but now, they are all mere colleagues. He further stated that due to the cut-throat competition, nobody has the time to acknowledge each other as friends and called a cricketing career an “isolated journey“.

When Shastri was asked about Ashwin’s comment, like always, he came up with a blunt statement. Shastri, who has worked closely with Ashwin, believes no matter what, there will always be colleagues in cricket as well as in the commentary box (after his stint as India’s head coach, Shastri again joined the commentary panel).

For me, it was always colleagues. You will have buddies who are colleagues. I mean…how many close friends does anyone have? If you go and ask anyone, they will say four to five in their life! I’m happy with five close friends in my life, I don’t want more than that,” Shastri told The Week. “What I’m saying is all the time colleagues. Commentary box, colleagues.”

In that same interview, Ravi Shastri expressed how impressed he is with England’s aggressive way of playing Test cricket. But the 1983 World Cup winner would love to take the challenge of being the head of the team that is playing against England.

Shastri also opined that the “Bazball” approach may not work every time considering the weather and other conditions. “But it’s exciting because it keeps you on the edge of the seat and that’s what you want in Test cricket,” he added.
