An ankle injury caused the Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev pulled himself out of the lenghty and messy match which ended in Rafael Nadal’s favour. After three hours without completing the second set, Nadal advanced to the final with a scoreline of 7-6 (10-8), 6-6. The final with eight seed Casper Ruud (who defeated Marin Cilic with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 and reached his first Grand Slam final) could also be the tennis great Nadal’s 22 Grand Slam victory if he wins the match. Nadal is also a French Open finalist for 14th time in his career.
During the match, Nadal displayed true sportsmanship when he was comforting Zverev. Zverev had badly twisted his ankle while he was chasing the ball. He was then taken off the court in a wheelchair. Zverev had reached the semi-final for a second successive year.
“Very sad for him, honestly, he was playing an unbelievable tournament,” Nadal said of Zverev. “He’s a very good colleague on the tour. I know how much he’s fighting to win a grand slam but for the moment he was very unlucky. The only thing I’m sure of is that he is going to win not one [but] much more than one. So I wish him all the very best.”
