Ravichandran Ashwin becomes leading wicket-taker for India in Border-Gavaskar Trophy
After a sedate morning session, where Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green calmly batted against the Indian bowlers. It was a bit surprising to see the Indian spinners wicketless for a long time at home and not witness a collapse. But right after breaking the 208-run partnership between Khawaja and Green, India’s star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scalped four more to bundle out the visitors for 480, and simultaneously completed his five-wicket haul, on Friday (March 10) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In a span of five overs, Australia lost Green, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Starc, and finally, India found a way to make a comeback. After tea, the off-spinner sent Todd Murphy to complete his five scalps and ended Australia’s innings by dismissing Nathan Lyon. Yesterday he got his first wicket by dismissing Travis Head.
With this fifer, the world no.1 Test bowler surpassed India great Anil Kumble to become the leading wicket-taker of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series for India. It was also his second five-wicket haul in the ongoing series (the first, he scalped in the first Test in Nagpur).
It was his 32nd five-wicket haul in his Test career and 26th on home. Meaning, he went past another Kumble’s record. Kumble had bagged 25th five-wicket haul on home soil. In addition to this, Ashwin now stands alongside Lyon for most scalps (113) in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history.

Meanwhile, those above-mentioned records don’t end here. The wily spinner now stands second on the list of bowlers who have five-wicket hauls on home soil. Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan had 45th of those fifers at home. The 36-year-old Ashwin now also stands alongside England great James Anderson with 32nd wicket-wicket hauls in Test cricket, which is also the joint-sixth highest.
Ashwin finished with the figures of 6/91. Apart from him, Mohammed Shami bagged two, while Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel got one each.
Earlier, Khawaja played one gem of an innings and missed his double century by 20 runs off lbw by Axar Patel. Green had slammed his maiden century also. Even Nathan and Todd Murphy contributed 34 and 41 runs respectively.
India had a positive start with both openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill playing a bit of attacking cricket. At stumps, India reached 36 and are trailing behind 444 runs. Rohit and Gill will start Day 3 from 17* and 18* respectively.
