Ravichandran Ashwin RIDICULES ‘Spirit of Cricket’ debate amidst cries post Jonny Bairstow-Alex Carey incident during 2nd Ashes Test
The 36-year-old off-spinner pointed out that Carey must have pulled off that dismissal after seeing Jonny Bairstow leaving his crease several times.

Ravichandran Ashiwn follows the cricketing rulebook closely and even if doubts loom over some incident happening on the field, Ashwin will give his verdict as per the rules. He often tried to ‘Mankad’ the batter at a non-striker’s end not caring for the controversy his actions might spark up. So when Australia’s Alex Carey dismissed England’s Jonny Bairstow in an unusual but legal way, Ashwin only came up with views to defend the Aussie wicketkeeper.
To shed on the incident that happened at the Lord’s, though it looked like Bairstow was having a brain fade moment, he was walking off the crease regularly in the previous overs, which was noticed by Carey. At a pivotal moment when Bairstow was on the verge of stitching a stand with skipper Ben Stokes, Carey, seeing Bairstow leaving the crease seconds after leaving a bouncer from Cameron Green, struck the stumps, leaving the English side and its fans in complete perplexion.
This did not help the Aussie however; for Stokes, right after this incident, turned up the heat to send the ball all over the ground, nearly snatching the victory with his formidable 155. The visitors heaved a sigh of relief when Josh Hazlewood dismissed the English skipper, which saw England losing the rest of the wickets quickly. Australia won that match by 43 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match Test series.
Ravichandran Ashwin points out how Alex Carey plotted Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal

Coming to Ravichandran Ashwin’s views, on the day the incident took place, he took to Twitter to back Alex Carey over his game smartness amidst cries of “Same old Aussies, always cheater” on social media. The 36-year-old off-spinner pointed out that Carey must have pulled off that dismissal after seeing Jonny Bairstow leaving his crease several times, and that it did not come out on the spur of the moment.
He discussed the same topic on his YouTube channel by saying: “Whenever there is a run-out in non-striker’s end or Carey-Bairstow incident, there is a new name that has arrived ‘Spirit of cricket’- but you don’t feel for (Alex) Carey who is 20 meters away from stumps, to hit the stumps by making the plan and you say Spirit of cricket, I don’t get it.”
“Alex Carey didn’t wait for a second to hit the stumps. He knew Bairstow will leave the crease and that’s why he threw at the stumps immediately. Bairstow didn’t take a single look behind and started leaving the crease,” he added.
