India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja reached another record during the Day 1 of the 2nd Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday (February 17) at the Arun Jaitley stadium in New Delhi. He surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev to become the fastest Indian cricketer to score 2500 runs and scalp 250 wickets in Test cricket.

He achieved this feat by dismissing Australia’s in-form Usman Khawaja (81 runs) courtesy of a stunning diving catch by KL Rahul. The 34-year-old Jadeja reached the milestone in his 62nd Test match which is three matches less than Kapil Dev. Dev recorded it in 65 matches. Jadeja has so far scored 2593 runs in Tests.

He is just behind the legendary English all-rounder Ian Botham in Test cricket history. Botham drove to the milestone in just 55 Test matches. Jadeja is followed by Imran Khan (64 Tests), Kapil Dev (65 Tests), and Richard Hadlee (70 Tests).

In the ongoing match, Jadeja scalped three wickets and conceded 68 runs. Apart from Khawaja, Pat Cummins and Todd Murphy became his other two victims.

The Indian spin twins, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin are breaking records in the ongoing four-match Test series. During the third day of the first Test, Ashwin, who had scalped four wickets, and Jadeja who wanted to complete the record of 250 Test scalps, made it difficult for captain Rohit Sharma to manage them.

After winning the first Test by an innings and 132 runs, Rohit did not mince his words when he told the broadcasters about how the two spinners are aware of their respective milestone.

Everyone is nearing a milestone. Some have picked 250 wickets. Someone 450. It’s a daily thing now. I don’t keep a check of milestones but these guys come to me and say ‘I am nearing 250 wickets, let me bowl’, ‘I have picked four wickets, need a five-for now’‘,” Rohit said.

Jadeja bagged seven wickets, while Ashwin picked up eight in the first Test. Ashwin had also reached the milestone of 450 scalps, becoming the fastest Indian and second overall to do so.

Talking about the ongoing match, Australia reached 263/10 after batting first. Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers for India with four scalps.
