India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has reportedly walked for a while after his surgery. He has been hospitalized at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Hospital and is being treated under the supervision of renowned Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the head of the Centre for Sports Medicine, and Director of Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the hospital.

Pant suffered ligament tears after his Mercedes got flipped and charred while he was on his way to meet his family in Roorkee in the early hours of December 30. Reportedly he dozed off in the car, and as he lost complete control of it, it speedily crashed into a divider. Thankfully, he was rescued and taken to a nearby Saksham hospital before he was shifted to Dehradun’s Max Hospital. There it was reported that the youngster had not suffered a life-threatening injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), although appreciative of the doctors at the Max Hospital, decided to airlift the wicketkeeper batter to Mumbai’s hospital where his ligament tear surgery was conducted, which took more than two hours. According to various sources, Pant walked for a while on Tuesday; would later walk with a walker and then independently.

With the mobilization, the doctors are beginning his rehabilitation process. He will start walking with a walker and then independently. He will need an extensive rehabilitation program,” a BCCI official said.

He suffered two major injury tears- anterior cruciate (ACL) and medial collateral (MCL). The risk of ACL injuries is very high and the experts are very diligent with rehab. “We have to go slow and steady in that also because particularly in ACL, re-injury rate is higher,” said Vaibhav Daga, the head-sports science and rehabilitation, consultant sports medicine at the hospital. For a wicketkeeper, both the ligament tears are of concern.

Daga then explained the general rehabilitation procedure they follow for ACL and MCL. He said that if it’s ACL it will take between six to nine months, and if it’s MCL, it will take between three to four months. As per the basic principles of rehabilitation, after the surgery, strength, and range of motion are important, then running, agility, jumping, power, and ultimately return to sport.
