“Would not have had the success,” Rohit Sharma on how data analytics helped his career as opener
During an interaction with SportsMechanics, Rohit revealed that if it weren't for data analytics, he wouldn't have had success as an opener.
Rohit Sharma
India captain Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the best openers in the world right now. But he didn’t start his cricket career as an opener. He used to come as a middle-order batsman but in the late 2012s, he was asked to open the innings for India.
And after becoming an opener, he climbed the ladder at a quicker pace and went on to create several records; the most famous being his three doubles centuries in ODI cricket, including the highest score of 264. Not to forget, he played crucial roles for his teams to help them win trophies in Indian Premier League (IPL)- five with the Mumbai Indians and one with the Deccan Chargers.
During an interaction with SportsMechanics, Rohit revealed that if it weren’t for data analytics, he wouldn’t have had success as an opener. “When I was asked to become an opener in 2013, I wanted to go through the footage and the data of what the best openers worldwide were doing. If it weren’t for the data analytics, I would not have had the success I have today,” said Rohit.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be forced to quit one format, says Ravi Shastri
The hectic cricketing schedule came into the limelight when England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes, who played a heroic knock in the 2019 ODI World Cup, took retirement from the format and has repeatedly lambasted the ‘unsustainable’ schedule.
And recently, former India head coach Ravi Shastri opined that Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and other players will be forced to quit one format due to the crammed-up cricketing calendar.
“I think not just with Virat and Rohit, it will be the case with a lot of players,” Shastri said while speaking to Sports Today. “There’s too much cricket. The volume of cricket is so much.” The 1983 World Cup winner further said that the emphasis should be given to the format that is important in that year.
Meanwhile, a big knock is expected from Rohit Sharma because apart from the lone century in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur, Rohit’s bat has remained quiet. He will be next seen in action in the decider of the three-match ODI series against Australia in Chennai tomorrow. He missed the first ODI due to personal reasons and scored 13 in the second match.
