Rohit Sharma is all set to return as the captain of the Indian T20 team according to a report. The opener last played a T20I in India’s loss against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup final. With this, he is all set to captain the side in the 2024 ICC ODI World Cup.
According to Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, Sharma had told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to decide if he would remain as T20I captain as soon as possible, which they did. He will most probably return during the T20I series with Afghanistan in January.
Along with that, the journalist claimed Virat Kohli will miss out on the T20 World Cup, as the selection committee wants to play Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill instead. The BCCI will meet up with the former captain soon to discuss his future in the format.
Andre Russell believes not picking Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the T20 team would be madness
While playing in the Abu Dhabi T10, Andre Russell was interviewed by the Hindustan Times. He admitted that he used to watch India matches only because of his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate, Rinku Singh. He also added that he did not understand the debate between Indian fans regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying he put them in the same bracket as Sachin Tendulkar.
I don't know why this is a big thing (the debate). Social media can actually get in the way of cricketers by questioning their potential. Rohit with the experience and Virat being Virat, it would be madness if India pick a team for the World Cup and they are not in them. Experience in World Cups is very important. You can't send 11 young soldiers to the battlefield. You have to have experience.Andre Russell to Hindustan Times
Russell believes India sending an inexperienced squad would cause more harm than good. The Indian team needed the experienced Kohli and Sharma in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
