One of the reasons behind Chennai Super Kings‘ (CSK) domineering show in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) is the openers- Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Their consistent performance ensures CSK get a good start, helping the team beat pressure later.

When CSK needed the most, Gaiwad delivered. Batting at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is not easy due to the slow pitch. But despite that, Gaikwad and Conway stitched an 87-run stand between them in Qualifier 1 against defending champions Gujarat Titans. Gaikwad racked up a 44-ball 60 with seven boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 136.36. On the other hand, Conway scored 40 runs off 34 balls.

The 26-year-old broke the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record after that knock. In 51 innings, he has now scored 1771 runs, the most by an Indian after 50 innings, Tendulkar used to stand on top with 1683 runs after those innings.

Meanwhile, in the match, CSK were asked to bat first and they totaled 172/7 in 20 overs. From the very start of Titans’ run chase, CSK dominated with their tight bowling and fielding; the consequence of which saw them win the match by 15 runs, advancing to the IPL final for the 10th time.

Ruturaj Gaikad thinks the reason behind CSK’s success is their pre-season camp and praised the management for helping players with their roles. Several CSK players, including Gaikwad, have never played in Chennai before this season. Their pre-season camp started on March 3.

The camp was very vital because a new surface was being laid over in Chennai,” Gaikwad said at the post-match press conference. “A lot of effort goes into our success. It started from last year when we didn’t qualify for playoffs. Obviously, the management got something to work and there were things which we needed to improve and put on effort on, or add someone,” Gaikwad said.

Gaikwad is sixth on the list of highest run-getters this season as he collected 564 runs at an average of 43.38 in 15 matches so far.
