In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, Maharashtra’s Ruturaj Gaikwad scripted history with his unbeaten 220-run knock against Uttar Pradesh in the quarterfinal match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday (November 28). He smashed seven back-to-back sixes in an over to become the first player in the history of limited-over cricket to do so.
His 220* knock from 159 balls consisted of 16 sixes and 10 fours, but nine of these sixes came in the last two overs of the innings. In the 49th overs bowled by Shiva Singh, Gaikwad sent the ball seven times over the boundary for consecutive sixes owing to a no-ball on the fifth ball. In the last over, he hit Kartik Tyagi for two sixes to steer his team to 330/5 in 50 overs.

Not only this, the 25-year-old’s knock shattered many records. Previously, Yuvraj Singh, Herschelle Gibbs, and Kieron Pollard held the record of smacking six back-to-back sixes, and now it’s broken by Gaikwad. He tops the list of highest run-scorers in a single over by amassing 42 runs, which Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura held with his 39 runs in an over off Alauddin Babu in a Dhaka Premier Division match in 2013.
He also created a record by smashing 16 sixes in one match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But he is not the only one to do so in List-A cricket as India skipper Rohit Sharma also smashed 16 sixes against Australia during his 209-run knock in 2013. But the record for the most number of sixes remains with New Zealand’s Lee Germon, who stuck eight biggies in a Shell Trophy match.
Gaikwad became the first batter from Maharashtra to score a double ton in List-A cricket. The record was previously held by Ankit Bawne when he scored 184 off 143 balls against Puducherry last week.
