The inaugural season of South Africa’s SA20 league in 2023 has come up with revolutionary decisions. On Monday (January 9), the league’s playing condition was announced on SA20’s official website. 

The captains can pick their playing XI after the toss. But they have to name the 13 players before the toss and leave out two players after the toss. The remaining two players automatically can enter the field as substitutes. 

While, in the SA20 league’s point system rule, a team will gain four points after winning a match. An extra point will also be awarded to the team if it achieves a run rate of 1.25 times to that of the opposition. The losing team will get no points and if the match ends in a draw, then both teams will be awarded two points. If the match is declared as a No result, then the run rate will not be applicable.

SA20’s release also stated other rules in addition to the above-mentioned ones. They are: 

  1. “The pace of play will be protected without suspensions with captains charged with in-game penalties for slow over-rates through fielding restrictions. 
  2. There has been an amendment to the free-hit rule, a bowled dismissal can’t lead to bye if the ball ricochets off the stumps. 
  3. Positive and attacking fielding will be encouraged. No runs can be taken off an intentional attempt to run out the batter if a direct hit deflects off the stumps. 
  4. There will be two strategic time-outs of 2 minutes and 30 seconds in duration in each innings. The time-outs are to allow the teams to re-group tactically.” 

SA20 will commence on Tuesday (January 10). Six dynamic franchises have made a minimum of 10-year investments which will sustain the future of South African cricket and the players. 

The six teams will play 33 matches in total which also included three playoffs which will have two semi-finals and one final. Each team’s 17-member squad will have four international players and plenty of chances will be given to the Proteas stars and young local talents. 

The six teams and their home ground are- Durban’s Super Giants (Kingsmead), Joburg Super Kings (Wandered), MI Cape Town (Newlands), Paarl Royals (Boland Park), Pretoria Capitals (SuperSport Park) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (St George’s Park).
