Virat Kohli is part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. The Bengaluru-based franchise boasts of having world-class batters but despite that, they have failed to win a trophy.

The bad luck continued this season also. RCB fumbled in their last league match against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) despite Kohli’s record-breaking seventh IPL century. Kohli’s century took the team to a decent 197/5 in 20 overs but the runs were not enough because GT’s Shubman Gill also slammed his second IPL ton, and along with Vijay Shankar’s half-century, GT won the match by six wickets.

This disheartened the RCB players as well as the fans, including England legend Kevin Pietersen. Pietersen, who also represented RCB, made an eye-catching statement regarding Kohli. He suggested the 34-year-old batter join Delhi Capitals. “Time for VIRAT to make the move to the capital city…! #IPL“, wrote Pietersen.

When the auction of the IPL 2008 started, it was almost certain that DC would go for Virat Kohli. However, instead, they picked Pradeep Sangwan to strengthen their bowling unit.

There was one conversation where I heard from people that the Delhi team was interested to go after me but the dynamics of their team turned out to be such that they went for Pradeep Sangwan– who was a left-arm seamer, amazing bowler, at that he was our best bowler in U-19,” Kohli said on an RCB podcast last year.

So Delhi decided to go for him because they wanted their bowling strengthened and RCB picked me. In hindsight, I feel it was such an important moment in my life. I didn’t realize it then but now when I look back, things could have been very different to what they are now. I would not have it any other way than this,” he added.

For RCB, needless to say, Kohli has displayed some of the most breathtaking games in IPL history. He stands atop with 7263 runs in 237 matches, including seven centuries and fifty half-centuries. In the 16th edition of the cricketing extravaganza, Kohli stands third in the list of most run-getters with 639 runs from 14 matches, including two centuries and six half-centuries.
