Recently, Shubman Gill spent a day out with English pop-star, Ed Sheeran, along with comedian Tanmay Bhat. In a video uploaded by Sheeran on YouTube, he showed some glimpses of his day with the two.
The trio played cricket, went out to eat and talked the whole day. When the trio went out for lunch, Sheeran revealed that he was going to visit Shah Rukh Khan’s house for dinner. Gill informed Ed Sheeran that he used to play in Khan’s team, to which the singer was surprised.
Bhat gave more context, explaining that Gill used to play for KKR, before being released. Gill had a special request for Sheeran, which left all three bursting in laughter.
Ask him why they did not retain me.Shubman Gill said
Gill made his IPL debut in 2018, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He spent his next three years with the franchise, playing at various positions before the management made him the opener later.
In the 58 matches he played with KKR, he reached the finals but the franchise released him the very next season. Now captaining Gujarat Titans, Gill has established himself as one of the best openers in the IPL.
Shubman Gill’s time at Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders picked Shubman Gill in the 2018 IPL Auction after an impressive performance in the 2018 U-19 World Cup. The franchise had paid ₹1.8 crores for him and gave him his debut that very season.
Gill usually played in the lower middle order for KKR, hitting 203 runs in 11 innings. He kept the same role in the next season, but the KKR management soon made him a top-order batter midway through the 2019 IPL. It was then that KKR used him as an opener.
In his two seasons as KKR opener, Gill scored a combined 918 runs, but his strike rate was a big issue. In the 2020 IPL, he had a SR of 117.96 and the next season it was 118.91. KKR finally released him the next season, and retained Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer ahead of him.
He was drafted by the newly formed Gujarat Titans next season, and paid him ₹8 crore. In his first season, he played an important role as they won the 2022 IPL. He then won the Orange Cap the next season, scoring 890 runs. After Hardik Pandya left for Mumbai Indians, GT appointed him as captain.
