Women's Asia Cup
A 66-run target was too easy for Harmanpreet Kaur’s Women in Blue in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 final on Saturday, October 15 at the Sylhet International Stadium.
Sri Lanka women’s decision to bat first after winning the toss did against their favor. 18 was the highest score by Inoka Ranaweera, while Oshadhi Ranasinghe scored 13 runs. Apart from these two batters, others couldn’t even reach the double-digit mark. In the end, they put on only 65/9 in their 20 overs. Renuka Singh picked up three wickets, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sneh Rana scalped two wickets each.
Indian women didn’t break a sweat and Smriti Mandhana‘s half-century knock was enough for the team to easily chase down the target. Mandhana scored an unbeaten 51 runs off just 25 balls with six boundaries and three fours at an impressive strike rate of 204. Harmanpreet scored 11 runs off 14 balls while Shefali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues lost their wickets to Ranaweera and Kavisha Dilhari respectively.
After this victory, Indian women have crowned Asia Cup champions for the seventh time. Since the inaugural Women’s Asia Cup tournament in 2004, Indian women kept dominating (with six straight wins) till 2018 which saw Bangladesh the only second country to lift the trophy. From 2004 to 2008, Asia Cup was held in the ODI format. However, since 2012, the tournament is being played in the T20I format.
