Virat Kohli is one of the most successful captains in Test history. He led India in 68 matches with 40 victories and 11 draws. But in a surprising move, he relinquished his post in 2022 which saw Rohit Sharma taking up the role. On social media, fans have often blamed former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) captain Sourav Ganguly for allegedly removing Kohli from the leadership job.
After India’s embarrassing 209-run defeat against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Rohit is facing the ire of the fans who started demanding Kohli be reinstated as the Test captain. Shedding light on Kohli’s decision, Ganguly claimed the BCCI was not aware of Kohli’s decision to relinquish Test captaincy and they still have no idea why he left it.
“BCCI was not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an Indian captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time,” Ganguly told Aaj Tak in an exclusive interview.
Virat Kohli-Saurav Ganguly captaincy saga
The saga started in 2021 when BCCI decided to remove Virat Kohli as an ODI captain despite the 34-year-old’s claim that he wanted to continue with the job after relinquishing T20 captaincy. This sparked a massive controversy surrounding his sour relationship with the board.
Kohli blamed a lack of communication as the reason behind this. He had a call with the selectors regarding his ODI captaincy on which, both he and the board have given different narratives. And next year, right after losing the series in South Africa, he stepped down from the Test captaincy.
“There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team,” he had said after resigning from Test captaincy.
