Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka arrested in Sydney on rape charges

Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested by police on charges of sexual assault made by a woman on November 2. He was arrested and taken to Sydney City police station on Sunday. The cricketer was part of Sri Lankan squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia.
However, the team has left for home after being eliminated from the showpiece event, leaving Gunathilaka behind. “Daushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for an alleged rape. The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without him,” a source close to the Sri Lankan team told PTI.
“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application. It’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of November 2, 2022. As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday.
Following further inquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1 am today (Sunday, November 6, 2022). He was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The Sri Lankan national was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL today,” said a New South Wales police statement as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Danushka Gunathilaka stayed with team even after injury

The Asia Cup 2022 champions made their way into the Super 8 but didn’t impress at all. They ended in fourth position in their group, meaning no place in the semifinals. They managed to win only two games out of their three battles, and saw elimination after they lost to England on Saturday.
The Sri Lankan team will next host Afghanistan team for three ODIs starting from November 25. It will be interesting to see what changes they make following a disappointing tournament. They have great talent whom they need to nourish for the next big event which is ODI World Cup in 2023.
