Former Australia skipper Steve Smith rubbished the rumors of retirement after playing a knock of 71 runs, helping Australia from a collapse during Day 2 of the last Ashes series at The Oval in London. After the match, he was quizzed about the rumors surrounding his retirement.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan had previously said he heard “whispers” and “gossips” that Smith and David Warner are playing their last match at The Oval and soon they will bid farewell to international cricket. Smith, in the press conference after the match, told the reporters that he was even unaware of such gossip.

I’m not retiring,” Smith said as quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. “I have no idea (where it’s come from) because I haven’t said it to anyone. I am not going anywhere yet.” Even Warner, who has been struggling a great deal with the bat, quashed the retirement rumors before the match.

The TV umpire Nitin Menon’s decision over Steve Smith’s non-dismissal sparked outrage on Twitter. Smith was given run out at first when he had scored 44 runs by substitute fielder George Ealham in the 78th over.

But Menon closely watched the dismissal several times frame by frame and found that when Ealham threw the ball toward keeper Jonny Bairstow, he dislodged the bails but, the bails fell off Bairstow’s gloves even before collecting the ball. And when Smith got well inside the crease, Bairstow collected the ball and then removed the bails. MCC later clarified that “For the purposes of dismissal- a bail has been removed at the moment that both ends of it leave their grooves.”

Meanwhile, the game on Day 3 has already started. After England’s 283 in their first innings, Smith’s half-century helped the Aussies reach 295. English batters started their second innings and so far scored 30 runs.
