West Indies, the two-time ODI World Cup champion, failed to even qualify for the forthcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in India. The notable players from the Caribbean Islands have been choosing franchise-based leagues over playing for the country. And that is why, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar came up with suggestions to help West Indies.

Gavaskar first recalled his playing days, when he made his first tour in West Indies and praised those legendary players there who have left a legacy behind. He stated how greats like Viv Richards, Clive Llyod, Andy Roberts, etc. used to earn extra income for every Test match they played.

But if you know that West Indian temperament and you have that much in the bank before you score a run or take a wicket, I am not sure about a lot of them if it actually matters. Because money is in the bank,” Gavaskar made this stinging remark about West Indies stars during The Indian Express Idea Exchange event. He suggested the West Indian board not give the players central contracts and instead increase the Test match fees and pay for their performances.

India played their first Test match against West Indies from July 12 to 15 to mark the beginning of their 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Though it’s safe to say that fans were not expecting a high-octane clash, they were disappointed to watch a dull one-sided cricket.

All West Indies could notch up in their first innings was a mere 150 runs. Indians put on 421/5d in their first innings and forced the follow-on. Kraigg Braithwaite and Co. were bundled out for a mere 130 runs in the second innings as India won the match by 141 runs.
