The legendary Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t mince his words while questioning the failure of the Indian team and players. This time, while sharing his opinions regarding how captains are enjoying security despite heartbreaking failures, he ended up taking an indirect dig at former India captain MS Dhoni.
There’s no doubt that India have been one of the best Test sides. Their performance in the two World Test Championships (WTC) can prove that, as they reached the finals in both editions but got thumped by New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023. Their failures in ICC events have irritated the Indian cricket fraternity.
And though most of the time the captain has to face the wrath of the fans, Gavaskar thinks despite that, the captains and the coaches need to be more accountable. He believes the Indian captains since 2011 have got some kind of security despite the below-par performances of the team.
“Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captains hasn’t changed,” said Gavaskar during IE Idea Exchange.

Sunil Gavaskar was talking about India’s whitewashes against England and Australia in the 2011/12 season. In 2011, India won the ODI World Cup but despite that, the Test side struggled badly in England and Australia.
Dhoni relinquished Test captaincy in 2014 and Virat Kohli took over as the leader. Under Kohli, Team India tasted incredible success as they won a series in England as well as in Australia and were nearly unbeatable at home but the 34-year-old stepped down from captaincy and Rohit Sharma was given the role. Under Rohit, though India reached the final of the WTC, as mentioned already, they faced the saddening defeat.
