Rohit Sharma talks about role of anchors in T20 cricket

India and Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma has completely played down Virat Kohli’s take on the role of anchor in T20 cricket. While Kohli believes there is still a need for players who can anchor the innings, Rohit thinks otherwise. The MI captain has said that the game has changed drastically and hence the role of anchors in T20 cricket is not relevant anymore.

Sharma said that a 15-ball 30 is better than a big score as it helps the team. Notably, ever since the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) started, there has been a lot of talk about the strike rate and the dying role of anchors in T20 cricket. Cricket pundits have pointed out that players should look to attack no matter what. Rohit disagrees on that front though.

“As I see it, there is no role for an anchor now. It is just how T20 cricket is played these days, unless you are 20/3 or 4, which is not going to happen every day,” Rohit told Jio Cinema in an exclusive chat. “Once in a while, you will be in that position and then someone needs to anchor the innings and finish off to a good score. There is no role for an anchor anymore, guys are playing differently.”

Rohit Sharma asks for a change in mindset

The MI captain further pointed out the need for the batters to change their mindset. Sharma said that as the opposition is playing with an attacking mindset, one can not afford to play defensively in T20s.

“If you do not change your mindset, you are going to get smashed. People on the other side are thinking about the game differently and taking it to the next level. All seven batters need to play their role, I believe that if you get a good score, it is good, but even if you get a good 30-40 off just 10-15 or 20 balls, it is (just) as good because you are doing the role for the team. The game has changed,” he added.
