In the first ODI between India and Zimbabwe, the former completely thrashed the host by 10 wickets on August 18 at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.
Choosing to bowl first, Indian bowlers restricted Zimbabwe to just 189 runs in 40.3 overs. Deepak Chahar, who made his comeback scalped three wickets and Prasidh Krishna and Axar Patel too got three wickets respectively.
India responded by a 192-run partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, both of them scored their half-centuries. While Dhawan played 113 balls to score 81 runs which included nine boundaries, Gill scored 82 runs off 72 balls that included 10 boundaries and a six. No Zimbabwe bowlers were able to get a breakthrough by scalping a wicket and India chased down the target easly in just 30.5 overs.
Shikhar Dhawan also completed 6500 runs in ODI format. And his partnership with Gill is also the second-highest first-wicket stand in the history of ODI cricket for India.
“I am enjoying batting with the youngster (Gill) and I feel like a youngster too,” Dhawan said in a post-match conversation with the broadcaster. “I enjoyed the consistency from West Indies,” he added.
“I knew that once I was set, I would go after the bowlers. I wanted to rotate the strike as well and then accelerate. My rhythm with Gill has settled nicely. The way he bats and times the ball is lovely to watch. He has shown the consistency in converting fifties into bigger fifties,” he said.
This was the first match of the three-match ODI series which and India is also playing their last series ahead of participating in the Asia Cup which will start from August 28.
