“Terribly one-sided match”- Twitter erupts as Mumbai Indians blow away panic-stricken Gujarat Giants to mark off 2023 WPL opener in style
It wasn't the start the Giants imagined. They will want to forget this match and move on. And at the same time, they will be hoping for their captain Beth Mooney's comeback in their next assignment.
Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Giants
Gujarat Giants just did not have any answer in front of the mammoth target of 208 posted by the Mumbai Indians. Even before the powerplay, that the Giants were going to lose the match was known already, for they lost half of their batters for a mere 23 runs. Mumbai Indians, courtesy of Hayley Matthews, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Amelia Kerr’s scintillating knocks, posted the gigantic 207/5 on Saturday (March 4) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and later won the match by 143 runs.
Giants never found time to settle. All-rounder Nat-Sciver Brunt was the reason. Though Giants’ ace opener Beth Mooney departed for retired hurt, other batters fumbled horribly. Nat got her first wicket in the first over itself.
In a nick of time, the Giants reached a point from where it was nearly impossible to recover. Three batters were dismissed for ducks, plus Mooney too was retired hurt for a zero. Only Dayalan Hemalatha played a knock that crossed the double-digit mark (unbeaten 29 off 23 balls). Soon they were skittled out for a mere 64 runs in 15.1 overs.

Now, this match of the curtain raiser is historic in itself, at the same time, it will be remembered in the years to come for the first-ever half-century knock. Harmanpreet Kaur was the woman who lit up the DY Patil Stadium with her maiden 50, plus it was the tournament’s first one too. Harmanpreet was in absolute control of everything in that match.
Whether this match will be remembered for the lowest-ever score, will be known in the days to come. Mumbai Indians checked all the boxes. Their batters were all guns blazing and their bowlers got early wickets, plus Saika Ishaque completed the first-ever four-wicket haul. It was one of those one-sided matches and fans certainly were waiting for the Mumbai bowlers to wrap up the match in their favor as quickly as possible.
