Ruturaj Gaikwad showed why he is considered a future star. After creating headlines for his exploits in domestic cricket, he displayed his red-hot form in the opener of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. With his stunning batting, Chennai Super Kings posted 178/7 against Gujarat Titans on Friday (March 31) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat won the toss and opted to bowl first. CSK were left in tatters for a while because Mohammed Shami drew the first blood by getting rid of the star opener Devon Conway in the third over and at the same time, he completed his 100th wicket in IPL.

When the next batter Moeen Ali and Gaikwad were stitching a partnership, Rashid Khan struck in the 6th over to end it. But CSK were in stable condition despite the two scalps, because of Gaikwad. Rashid dismissed Moeen and an over later, he sent Ben Stokes into packing as well. While Moeen added 23 runs, Stokes could score just seven runs. Soon Ruturaj completed his half-century off 23 balls, which is needless to say the first half-century of this season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad would have become the first player to score the first century of this IPL but Alzarri Joseph did not let that happen. Both the team players seemed confused about whether the first ball by Joseph in the 18th over was a no-ball or not.

It was given out by the umpire but still, he wanted to check whether it was a no-ball or not. The third umpire didn’t give it a no-ball and Gaikwad had to depart after scoring 92 runs from just 50 balls, which included four boundaries and nine maximums at an impressive strike rate of 184.

In that same over, Joseph dismissed Ravindra Jadeja on the fourth deliver, and then Mohammed Shami in the next over, sent Shivam Dube into the pavilion. Runs were not coming and CSK, despite the start, felt the pressure but not for too long because of MS Dhoni’s cameo in the last over. He smashed a six and a four off two consecutive balls to take CSK to 178/7 in their 20 overs.
