“Boy will rule world cricket soon!”- Twitter goes berserk after Tilak Varma shoulders Mumbai Indians’ batting responsibility with a glorious knock vs RCB
Tilak Varma held his nerve under pressure and slammed his half-century. If it weren't for him, Mumbai's condition would have been horrible.
Tilak Varma
From the very start, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) put pressure on the Mumbai Indians‘ (MI) batsmen. Despite the early scalps, Mumbai, with the help of Tilak Varma‘s brilliant knock, posted a challenging total of 171/7 in their 20 overs on Sunday (April 1) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Faf du Plessis, the captain of RCB, won the toss and elected to bowl first. When Mumbai Indians openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan walked in, the latter was going for big hits but Mohammed Siraj, who is known for sending batters to the pavilion with the new ball, became successful here also. He dismissed Kishan for 10 runs (off 13 balls).
The Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who fetched a whopping amount during the auction this year, produced a flop show in today’s match. All he could contribute were five runs because Reece Topley shattered his stumps in the fourth over.
It was the skipper’s chance to head back to the pavilion then. Rohit Sharma played 10 balls, not something Mumbai fans expected from him. He scored just one run before Akash Deep made him his victim with a catch by Dinesh Karthik. Three batters fell inside the Powerplay.

Suryakumar Yadav’s innings was also short-lived, courtesy of a sharp catch by Shahbaz Ahmed off Michael Bracewell’s delivery in the ninth over. A few overs later, Mumbai lost their fifth wicket for 98 runs when Nehal Wadhera became Karn Sharma’s victim. Karn also got rid of the dangerous Tim David in the 16th over.
When at one end Mumbai Indians lost wickets in regular intervals, Tilak Varma held his nerve under pressure and slammed his half-century. If it weren’t for him, Mumbai’s condition would have been horrible. He shouldered the responsibility alone, scoring an unbeaten 84 runs from just 46 balls with nine boundaries and four maximums at a brilliant strike rate of 182.61.
Harshal Patel then dismissed Hrithik Shokeen for one run with a spectacular catch by Faf du Plessis. Shokeen scored five runs from three balls. In the end, Arshad Khan scored a nine-ball 15 runs to take Mumbai to a challenging total of 171/7 in their 20 overs. Among the RCB bowlers, Siraj, Topley, Michael Bracewell, Akash, and Harshal scalped one wicket each, while Karn bagged two wickets.
