Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Delhi Capitals by 50 runs in their campaign opener on Saturday (April 1) at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow. Mark Wood‘s bowling exploits were the reason behind Delhi’s inability to chase the huge target of 194. He scalped five wickets and simultaneously left DC’s innings in tatters despite captain David Warner’s slow half-century.

The DC openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner have a brilliant start to the innings, stitching 41 runs between them before Wood’s 147.3 kph delivery smashed into Shaw’s stumps to end the youngster’s innings. All he could score was 12 runs from nine balls.

Right on the next ball, Wood sent Mitchell Marsh into packing. The ball, at 147.8 kph left Marsh stunned as it went past him to knock over the stump. Marsh took a long walk back to the stadium after his golden duck.

An over later, DC lost their next batter, Sarfaraz Khan, for four runs from nine balls, courtesy of Wood again. Then Rilee Rossouw attempted to put things back for the DC with his 20-ball 30 runs, which also included three fours and a six. But not for too long because of Ravi Bishnoi’s delivery and keeper Kyle Mayers’ catch.

Half of Delhi’s batters had headed back to the pavilion when Bishnoi got rid of Rovman Powell in the 13th over. Powell played three balls and could add just one run. Soon Aman Khan followed Powell to the dugout courtesy of Avesh Khan’s delivery. In that same over, Avesh dismissed Warner as well, who played a slow knock of 56 runs from 48 balls, with four boundaries.

Although it was impossible for the Capitals to recover from the damage and the match looked like a one-sided one, Mark Wood’s next two scalps in the last over added life to the match. He became the first bowler to complete a five-wicket haul in this season of the cash-rich league. He finished with the figures of 5/14 in his full quota of four overs at a brilliant economy of 3.50. His fifer saw LSG bundle out the Capitals for 143/9 to win the match by 50 runs.

Earlier during LSG’s innings, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, and Ayush Badoni took the total to 193/6. Mayers slammed 73, while Pooran and Badoni scored 36 and 18 respectively. Badoni in the death overs finished LSG’s innings in style with his big hits.
