Women in Blue take a victory lap around the ground after beating Australia in a Super Over thriller

As Australia were staring at another victory in the 2nd T20I, the Women in Blue produced a stunning performance in front of the packed DY Patil crowd to end Australia’s 16 consecutive winning streak in T20Is in 2022. As India tied the match by reaching 187, they ended playing their maiden Super Over in T20Is on Sunday (December 11) in Navi Mumbai. This will be remembered as one of the best matches the Women in Blue have ever played.

India batted first in the Super Over. Smriti Mandhana’s 13 off 3 balls (with a four and a six), helped the team reach 20/1. Renuka Singh was handed the ball and she did the rest of the job by restricting the mighty Aussies to 16/1 to win the match by four runs. After the match, they took a victory lap around the ground to honor the crowd who attended the match to support the Women in Blue.

Earlier, India failed with the ball again, just like in the 1st T20I as no one was able to break the unbeaten 158-run partnership of Beth Looney and Tahlia McGrath. Both the dangerous batters completed their half-centuries to steer the score to 187/1 in 20 overs. Mooney scored 82* off 54 with 13 fours, while McGrath played a 51-ball 70 with 10 fours and a six.

Only Deepti Sharma could get a wicket when she dismissed skipper Alyssa Healy. Healy had scored a quick 25 runs from 15 balls with five fours.

During India’s chase, Mandhana produced absolute carnage by smashing four maximums and nine boundaries, scoring 79 off 49 balls to give a fiery start to the innings along with Shefali Verma. Verma stitched a 76-run stand for the first wicket with Mandhana with her 23-ball 34 runs.
After their dismissals, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur had short-lived innings before Richa Ghosh at No.5 kept the hopes alive with her unbeaten knock. She scored 26 runs from 13 balls with three maximums- a much-needed contribution.

It was Devika Vaidya who showed nerves of steel when she sent the last ball of the innings across the boundary for a four when India needed five runs to win. As they tied the scores, the Super Over was introduced. It was first for the Indian women and they won it.
