India had a healthy start despite KL Rahul’s failure when Rohit Sharma’s men locked horns with the Netherlands on Thursday [October 27] at the SCG in Sydney. Rohit first played a captain’s knock with his half-century followed by two 50s from Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav to take India’s total to 179/2 in 20 overs.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. Rahul once again failed to score when he departed after a mere nine runs off 12 balls (with a four). However, Rohit led the attack despite losing his opening duo and went on to smash a half-century (53 runs off 39 balls with four boundaries and three maximums) at a strike rate of 135.90.

But in the 12th over, Fred Klaassen bowled a slower and fullish delivery; Rohit attempted to deposit this over cow corner, however, he didn’t power his shot well and the ball ended up straight to the hands of deep mid-wicket fielder Colin Ackermann.

After Rohit’s departure, it was the show of the “Brothers of destruction” (as fans started to call the duo of Kohli and Suryakumar). Both Kohli and Suryakumar completed their half-centuries to take India to a competitive total of 179/2 in their allotted 20 overs.

It was also Kohli’s second back-to-back half-century knock. He played 44 balls to score an unbeaten 62 runs with three fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 140.91.

It’s well known if the other batter scores alongside Suryakumar at a good strike rate, the latter becomes dangerous and smashes the ball above the 200+ strike rate. Suryakumar played just 25 balls to hammer an unbeaten 51 runs, studded with seven fours and one maximum at a strike rate of 204. The lone six came on the last ball of the innings which he smashed to complete his half-century.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar also became the leading run-scorer in T20Is this year so far. He surpassed Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan (825 runs at a strike rate of 125) and scored 867 runs at a superior strike rate of 185.

Among the Dutch bowlers, Klaassen and Paul van Meekeran could scalp one wicket each. It looks like India will easily defend this target against the Netherlands to grab another crucial two points.
