“Not Dhoni, not Gilchirst!”- Rishabh Pant rescues India with ruthless century and breaks the internet

Rishabh Pant produced absolute carnage against England at Edgbaston on Day 1, Friday, July 1 in Birmingham. When India’s innings tethered at 98/5, Pant unleashed a quickfire with 89-ball century. He missed his 150 by just four runs, getting dismissed at 146 off 111 balls. If it’s not enough, Pant, who is 24 years old, had broken MS Dhoni’s 17-year long Test record by becoming India’s youngest wicket-keeper batsman to score a fastest century.

When India’s inning staggered, Rishabh Pant entered and rescued the team by smashing 19 fours and four sixes and with his 222-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket. After Rishabh Pant’s dismissal, Jadeja (83*) and Shardul Thakur will open innings on Day 2.

This century was also Pant’s fifth Test century and fourth overseas century. It was also his third against England and second on English soil.

Host England had won the toss and opted to bowl first in a overcast condition. All eyes were at stalwart Virat Kohli but Matthew Potts bowled him out at 11 runs. James Anderson was to be blamed for shattering the top-order batsmen.

But then entered Rishabh Pant and he had other ideas. He launched a counterattack, did not spare any English bowlers, and landed the ball to the boundaries on all parts of Edgbaston. At the end of Day 1, Pant’s 144 and Jadeja’s 83* had taken India to 338 for seven.

“I was just focussing on the ball. Yes, the pressure was there because when you lose 3-4 wickets early on. You’vs got to build a partnership but at the same time, if you focus on the result, you might not get the result. I tried to focus process which gives me results most of the time,” said Pant after innings of Day 1.

“As a player, I try not to think about what the opposition wants to do. It’s more about what I want to do and read the game situation,” Pant added.

Following Rishabh Pant’s fearless knock, cricket lovers including current and former cricketers and people from all walks of life saluted the young Indian wicketkeeper batter.
