Australia were able to restrict the Indian batters from the very beginning as the latter’s wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Still, India somehow were able to cross 150 before Deepti Sharma‘s quickfire took India to a commanding total of 172/5 in their 20 overs on Friday (December 9) at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.

Aussie skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to field first. India got off to a good start with Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. They lost their first wicket when Ellyse Perry dismissed Verma in the 3rd over. Verma had smashed two fours and two sixes, scoring 21 runs from 10 balls at a strike rate of 210.

Mandhana scored 28 runs from 22 balls with five fours when Annabel Sutherland’s delivery ended her knock in the 8th over. But before Mandhana’s wicket, India lost No. 3 batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, for a duck off Perry’s delivery.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored a 23-ball 21 runs to stabilize the innings, but Kim Garth sent her to the dugout in the 12th over. It was Grath’s maiden wicket on her debut match.

The wicket of Richa Ghosh was the last one that India lost. Ghosh played 20 balls and scored 36 runs with five fours and two sixes at an impressive strike rate of 180. Ashleigh Gardener got rid of her in the 17th over when her fullish ball landed wide and Ghosh attempted to reach out for it but missed it. Healy behind the stumps dislodged the bails quickly.

Then Deepti played her knock, scoring an unbeaten 36 runs from 15 balls with eight fours at a strike rate of 240 to take India to a total of 172/5 in their allotted 20 overs. For Australia, Grath, Gardner, and Sutherland grabbed one wicket each, while Perry picked up two wickets.
