Delhi Capitals bagged Indian Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Shafali Verma for Rs 2 crore in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai. Verma joined Jemimah Rodrigues after the Capitals purchased her for Rs 1.10 crore. Also, Aussie skipper Meg Lanning will be playing for the Capitals in the inaugural season. DC roped in Lanning for Rs 1.1 crore.
The 19-year-old Shafali Verma has represented the Women in Blue in 51 T20Is and amassed 1200 runs so far at a strike rate of 134.53. Recently, she took the Under-19 team to the final where her team defeated England by six wickets. Verma was also the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 172 runs at an impressive strike rate of 193.25.
So far, Smriti Mandhana attracted the highest bid when Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased her for a massive amount of Rs 3.40 crore. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur signed with the Mumbai Indians.

Meanwhile, a total of 409 players will go down under the hammer. Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will host all the 22 matches. The five teams that will own the teams in the inaugural season are- Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz. A total of 90 slots are available and each team can have 15-18 players.
