South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius has retired from international cricket with immediate effect. While announcing his retirement, he expressed his desire to play more franchise cricket around the world.
In his statement released on Cricket South Africa‘s official website, Pretorius said: “A few days ago, I made one of the toughest decisions of my cricketing career. I have decided to retire from all forms of international cricket.”
The 33-year-old wants to have a better balance in his career and family life and will continue to play franchise cricket. “I am shifting my focus to T20 and other shorter formats for the rest of my career,” he added.
Pretorius has represented South Africa across all three formats. He played 30 T20Is, 27 ODIs, and three Tests. Across all formats, the all-rounder has amassed 1895 runs and scalped 77 wickets since making his international debut in 2016. He retired with a batting strike rate of 164 in T20Is.

He was a regular face in South Africa’s white-ball cricket matches and was a part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2019, as well as the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He was South Africa’s first-choice all-rounder for the 2022 T20 World Cup but was ruled out of the tournament due to a fractured thumb. Since then, he lost some ground to Marco Jansen in white-ball cricket.
