Asia Cup 2022 started and in its opening match, Sri Lanka clashed against Afghanistan on Saturday, August 27 at the Dubai International Stadium in UAE. Afghanistan’s pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi’s three wickets helped his team bowl out Sri Lanka for just 105 runs.
Afghanistan have won the toss and opted to bowl first. The top batters didn’t stay at the crease fo long as Farooqi claimed two wickets in the very first over.
First, he dismissed Kusal Mendis on the fifth ball of the first over and dismissed Charith Asalaka on golden duck on the next ball. In the next over, Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed Pathum Nissanka for 3. Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka then for 17 runs off 17 balls.
Wanindu Hasaranga scored two runs and became a victim of Rahman. But Bhanuka Rajapaksa was able to score 38 runs off 29 balls that also included five fours and a six. But in 12.2 over, Nabi bolwed a fuller one and Chamika Karunaratne flicked it towards the leg side and went for one. There was a slight misfield, so the batters decided to take another run. But Nabi made a direct hit and Rajapaksa lost his wicket there.
Nabi also bowled out Dasun Shanaka on golden duck. Chamika Karunaratne kept Sri Lanka’s innings alive till the penultimate over. But he too became a victim of Farooqi’s yorker length ball. Chamika stayed there and attempted to go big on the off side. But he only managed and inside edge and the ball went onto rattle the stumps.
At the end, all Sri Lanka could put on the scoreboard was a mere 105 runs in 19.4 overs. Farooqi claimed three wickets in 3.4 overs spell and conceded 11 runs that also had one maiden over. Naveen-ul-Haq claimed one wicket while Rahman and Nabi scalped two wickets.
