Jasprit Bumrah
India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 due to a stress fracture in his back. Owing to this, Team India couldn’t avail his services in the 2022 Asia Cup as well as the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.
Ahead of the three-match ODI series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a change in the squad by including Bumrah but as he complained of stiffness in his back, BCCI thought it sensible to not take a rash decision by rushing one of its star pacers again. Bumrah is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
When the BCCI released the squad for the upcoming Gavaskar-Border Trophy, fans were disheartened not to find Bumrah’s name for the first two Tests. Recently, a video emerged online where Bumrah could be seen bowling to Venkatesh Iyer in the nets. This has made fans happy and they are hopeful of seeing the 29-year-old don the Indian jersey again.

Apart from all the other things, Bumrah’s availability for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India later this year, is a major concern for the Indian cricket fraternity. India men’s cricket team bowling coach Paras Mhambrey explained why Jasprit Bumrah is irreplaceable.
“Bumrah is a unique bowler; he is irreplaceable. Let’s accept the fact that the kind of skills he brings are very difficult to replicate,” Mhambrey said at the pre-match conference ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand.
“It’s also an opportunity for other bowlers because you will be tested in different situations. It will help us understand what they bring to the game, at what stages they bowl, and how they do it. There are one-on-one discussions with them. It’s an ongoing process,” he added.
In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj emerged as a leading wicket-taker for India in ODI last year. This year, he has already picked 14 wickets in four matches and can garner more in the ongoing second ODI against New Zealand.
