In the first match of the Super 4 stage, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka locked horns with each other and the former had put up 175/6 on the scoreboard on Saturday, September 3 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Afghanistan opener Hazratullah and Rahmanullah Gurbaz had a 46-run partnership between them before the former was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka on 13 runs off 16 balls with two fours.
Ibrahim Zadran had scored 40 runs off 38 balls with two fours and a six and Madushanka scalped his wicket also. In the 18th over, Madushanka bowled a slower and fuller one and Zadran shuffled across and tried to paddle it away but miscued and Asitha Fernando at short fine leg grabbed it comfortably.
Najibullah Zadran scored 17 runs off 10 balls with a four and a six but Wanindu Hasaranga‘s run-out sent the former back. Gurbaz was the top scorer for Afghanistan. He smashed a total of four boundaries and six sixes to score 84 runs in just 45 balls at an amazing strike rate of 186.67.
But in the 16th over, Fernando bowled a full one outside off, was rather a slower one. Gurbaz tried to heave it across but toe-ended his shot to deep mid-wicket. Hasaranga grabbed the ball and with this wicket, it also ended a 93-run stand between Gurbaz and Zadran. At the end, the batters’ innings set up 175/6 in 20 overs.
