India are playing their third match in the ongoing 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. At the St George’s Oval in Port Elizabeth, they are clashing against England as the latter put on a challenging total of 151/7 on Saturday (February 18).

India got an upper hand over their opponent before the powerplay courtesy of Renuka Thakur’s three wickets. But Natalie Sciver, Heather Knight, and later Amy Jones put the pressure back on India when they took their team to the commanding total. Renuka stood out with the ball when she later picked two more wickets to complete her five-wicket haul.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to bowl first. Renuka Thakur with the new ball was dangerous as she sent three batters into packing before the powerplay.

England were tethering at 29/3 at one stage but Natalie Sciver put England in the driving seat with her half-century knock. She soaked all the pressure and played brilliant reverse hits but Deepti Sharma in the 17th over got rid of her when Sciver attempted for a reverse sweep but failed to connect it well and Smriti Mandhana at short third man grabbed a diving catch. Sciver departed after scoring 50 runs from 42 balls with five boundaries.

England skipper Heather Knights played a slow but effective knock of 28 off 23 balls. It was needed at that time to save wickets. But Shikha Pandya eventually trapped her in the 11th over with Shafali Verma pouching an easy catch.

It was Amy Jones who was all guns blazing with her three boundaries and two maximums. At a strike rate of 148.15, she scored 40 runs off 27 balls before Renuka dismissed her in the last over. But it was too late for India. Jone had already done the job of steering the total to 151/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Sophia Dunkley, Danni Wyatt, Alice Capsey, Amy Jones, and Katherine Brunt were Renuka’s five wickets. Notably, it was her maiden five-wicket haul across all the formats and became the first Indian pacer to take five-wicket in T20 World Cup.
