In the Super 4’s first match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, the latter avenged their group stage defeat by four wickets on Saturday, September 3 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in UAE.

Sri Lanka had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz‘s 84 runs off 45 balls (with four fours and six sixes) ensured Afghanistan’s score read competitve with 175/6 on scoreboard.

Sri Lanka responded with 62-run partnership for the first wicket between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. Mendis was the first to get dismissed. He scored a quick 36 runs off 19 balls with two fours and three sixes before Naveen-al-Haq dismissed him with his short-length ball. Mendis stood tall and pulled it cleanly but hit it flat and Ibrahim Zadran at the deep mid-wicket held onto the catch safely.

Then it was Nissanka who soon left the crease. He scored 35 runs off 28 balls with three fours and a six and Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the bowler to sent him back with a carrom ball, shorter and outside off with extra bounce as well. Nissanka looked to cut but got a faint outside edge and Gurbaz pouched a safe catch.

Danushka Gunathilaka was sent back from Rashid Khan‘s delivery. Gunathilaka scored 33 runs in 20 balls with two four and two sixes. Khan served it sloww and shorter around the off. The ball skidded through and Gunathilaka looked to swing across the line but the stumps were already disturbed.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa then played a quick innings of 31 runs off 14 balls with four boundaries and a six only to get dismissed by Naveen-ul-Haq. Wanindu Hasaranga too worked with the bat as well as he scored an unbeaten 16 runs off nine balls to help the Lankans win the match by four wickets.
