India batter Shubman Gill, who replaced regular India skipper Rohit Sharma as opener, perfectly used the opportunity by slamming his maiden Test ton on Friday (December 16) in Chattogram against Bangladesh. In his 110-run knock, he smashed 10 fours and three maximums.

After bowling out Bangladesh for a paltry 150 with Kuldeep Yadav’s fifer, India started their second innings with openers KL Rahul and Gill. While Rahul’s knock was short-lived, he stitched a 70-run stand with Gill. Gill’s strokeplay saw him racing to his maiden Test ton with a boundary before Mehidy Hasan Miraj got rid of him in the 50th over.

Miraj delivered a short one which Gill tried to loft but miscued it. Substitute fielder Mahmudul Hasan Joy pouched the ball safely to end Gill’s knock.

Gill celebrated his century by bowing down. The likes of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were in splits after watching this celebration by the 23-year-old. The entire dressing room applauded his special knock.

In his first innings, Gill scored just 20 runs off 40 balls before becoming Taijul Islam‘s victim. It’s still unsure if he will get another chance to bat again if skipper Rohit Sharma returns to the squad following recovery of his thumb injury, in the 2nd Test.

Also, this is Gill’s 12th Test match. He scored his maiden ton in ODIs earlier this year against Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, right now (at the time of writing this article), Pujara has completed his ton and is at 102, and Kohli has scored 19. India has declared their innings at 258/2d. They are leading by a massive 512 runs and have enough time to bundle out Bangladesh to wrap up the 1st Test.

As soon as Gill reached the three-digit mark, Twitteratis started celebrating his knock. Apart from the praise he received, some even called him a future legend of Indian cricket. Fans also paid tribute to the knock he played at the Gabba Test that helped India secure the series against Australia.
