UNIMPRESSED Virender Sehwag cites his own example and urges Shubman Gill to score double ton on flat Indore track

India opener Shubman Gill missed his ton in Mohali during the first of the three-match ODI series against Australia. However, without much trouble, he completed his fifth century of the year at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. And though his ton was praised by the fans, former India opener Virender Sehwag was left unimpressed.
Gill took 97 balls to reach 104 runs with six boundaries and four maximums before he was dismissed by Cameron Green. The Indore track was flat and it has given batters the opportunity to be on song and send the balls around the park like a child’s play.
This is the reason why Sehwag was not satisfied seeing Gill score just a hundred and not convert it into a big knock or his second double-century in the ODI format. The 2011 World Cup champion talked about how age plays a role in batting, that at a younger age, players don’t get tired easily and recover quickly, which is why, as per Sehwag, Gill should think about scoring a lot of runs before turning 30.
“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that in the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn’t have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” he said on Cricbuzz.
Sehwag then pointed out that when Gill departed, there were still 18 overs left, and had he stayed, he would have blasted a lot more runs. He cited his own example of how he hammered a double century back in 2011 at the same venue.
Shubman Gill rested for the third ODI match
The final ODI match will be played in Rajkot but Shubman Gill won’t be flying there. He will instead join the team in Guwahati for the preparation of the upcoming ODI World Cup. India will start their World Cup journey by locking horns with Pat Cummins and Co. on October 8 in Chennai.
Gill is expected to play a significant role due to the form he is in. This ODI century against Australia was his fifth this year and his sixth overall in the format. This year, the Punjab-born batter blasted a total of seven hundreds across all formats (one in T20I, one in Test, and five in ODIs).
