Recently the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, tweeted on how Indians should visit the Lakshadweep Islands instead of traveling abroad to other islands. He uploaded a video of the islands, showing its beauty to the world. This tweet infuriated Mariyam Shinuna, a minister in the Maldives government, who then tweeted out racist remarks.

Most Indians called out the racist tweets, including former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad. In his tweet, Prasad said a member of any government shouldn’t be speaking like that. He added that the government should be planning to promote and expand their own beaches and coastlines for tourism.

Their President, Mohamed Muizzu, had previously campaigned for Indian troops to leave the country. The country is a huge tourist spot for many Indians.
