Novak Djokovic recently spoke about his admiration for Indian batter, Virat Kohli. During the 2024 Australian Open, Djokovic revealed that he and Kohli have been chatting for years, but haven’t met yet. In a new special video, Kohli talked about his relationship with Djokovic.
On the eve of the 2nd T20I against Afghanistan, Kohli spoke about how he got in touch with Djokovic. Kohli said he was going through the Serbian’s Instagram profile and decided to text him, but instead found a direct message by the tennis superstar.
I got in touch with Novak very organically, I think I was just looking at his profile once on Instagram, and I just happened to press the message button and thought I would just say hello. And then I saw a message from him on my DM already. I had never opened it myself. I was like, let me just check if it's a fake account or something like that. But then I checked it again and it was legitimate.Virat Kohli said on bcci.tv
The two started chatting regularly, congratulating each other for their achievements. Kohli said the fact that global athletes were exchanging words with each other made it inspirational for future generations. He added that they shared the passion for fitness, which added to their mutual admiration and respect for each other. Kohli hopes to soon meet Djokovic over a cup of coffee.
Virat Kohli on Steve Smith and Novak Djokovic playing with each other
Recently in the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic and Steve Smith interacted. The duo played cricket and tennis together, with Smith successfully returning Djokovic’s service with a forehand shot. In that same video, Virat Kohli praised Smith for the return and then commented how the Serbian was better with a bat, when compared to cricketers playing with racquets.
The 35-year-old batter said he was tempted to play racquet sports due to the eye-hand coordination required. Kohli further spoke about how tough it was to return tennis serves because of their speed, so he probably doesn’t have a chance. At the end of the video he wished the Serbian for the AO, adding how much he loves Australia.
