In an event organized by sponsors before the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup, Wasim Akram was invited as a guest. Ex-cricketer Wasim Akram played for Pakistan from 1984 to 2003. He was the captain as well, from 1993 to 2000. He is regarded as one of the greatest pacers of all time.
In the event, a reporter asked him about the India- Pakistan clash and called it the “mother of all battles”. He said the other matches won’t be as important as the clash between India and Pakistan. Akram replied, “ Last time we had predicted an India versus Pakistan final but Sri Lanka won the competition. All three teams are dangerous — anyone can win on their day,” Akram said. “There are other teams competing too. Last time Sri Lanka won the title, India even failed to make it to the final.“
Akram and many had predicted a final between India and Pakistan, but were shocked with how India underperformed in the 2022 Asia Cup, not qualifying for the finals. India were defending champions in 2022, but finished 3rd in the Super 4.
Wasim Akram believes that politics should be kept out of sport
When asked if the Pakistan Cricket Board should’ve taken a stand against the BCCI for not playing in Pakistan, Akram said that for a long time he has always believed keeping sports and politics separate. He said that people should be in contact with each other and thinks the average Indian and Pakistani respect each other. He hopes soon there’s regular matches between the both. Roger Binny, the President of BCCI and Rajeev Shukla, the Vice President, will travel to Pakistan during the Asia Cup.
India and Pakistan will face off on the 2nd of September in Kandy. Before that match, Pakistan will face Nepal in Multan for the 2023 Asia Cup opener.
