WATCH: Charlie Dean in tears after Deepti Sharma mankads her to snatch victory from England at Lord’s
Deepti Sharma
The last ODI between India and England was Jhulan Goswami‘s last match of her career, however, it will be remembered for more reasons. She has got the dream farewell she wanted; her teammates lifted her off on their shoulders to bid her goodbye from the sport. There was also jeering from many, not for her but for all-rounder Deepti Sharma.
England’s score read 118/9 in the 44th over. The two left batters Charlie Dean and Freya Davis were playing, stitching a 35-run stand between them. The former was standing at the non-striker’s end when Deepti ran Dean out with mankading.
Deepti calmly took the bails off while the umpire was signalling a dead ball. Indians stayed with the appeal so the umpires went upstairs and later it was given a dismissal.

Nasser Hussain was on air and said, “It would be debated for a long time but it’s in the law of the games. It states that you can be run out. Remember it’s in the laws of the game.”
Mankading was previously listed under the ‘Unfair Play’ but the new rules have given this dismissal a green card of a run-out. It’s of the most controversial law in the sport.
Law 41.16 states that: “Non-striker leaving his/her ground early,” states: “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out.”
Harmanpreet Kaur’s savage reply when asked about Deepti Sharma’s run-out
India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed Deepti Sharma during the post-match presentation. She said Deepti hasn’t done anything that is not mentioned in the ICC rules.
“To be honest, I thought you will ask about all ten wickets, because they were not easy to take,” said Harmanpreet.
“It’s a part of the game I don’t think we have done something new, you can always take those chances. It shows that you are aware about what the batters are doing. I will back my player because I don’t think she has done anything that isn’t in the ICC rules. Everything is part of the game. At the end of the day, a win is a win and you need to enjoy that,” she added.
