Hardik Pandya hands trophy to Prithvi Shaw who did not get a chance to play in T20I series vs New Zealand
India’s stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya received flak for not giving Prithvi Shaw a chance to feature in the XI. Shaw has been out of the team since July 2021 and earned the call for the T20I series against New Zealand after brilliant performances in the domestic setup. However, the 23-year-old was bench-warmed due to the presence of openers like Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill.
“Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his opportunity as Shubman Gill has done very well and was already part of the T20 team,” Pandya had said in a pre-series conference in Ranchi.
Fans wanted Shaw to take Kishan’s place in the third T20I as the latter fumbled in the New Zealand series. But Pandya and management still went for Kishan, who could score just one run from three balls. After India won the series, Pandya received the series-winning cup and handed it to Shaw, who looked excited.

Saba Karim believes including Prithvi Shaw in the squad will help him build discipline
Previously, former India player Saba Karim stated that bringing Shaw back into the team will help him in building discipline. “If he stays with the team then it will build discipline inside him. You can monitor or guide him. Rahul Dravid is there. It’s not necessary to play him. I accept that he talent and ability,” Karim had said as quoted by News18.
Meanwhile, India thrashed New Zealand by a huge margin of 168 runs in the decider T20I on Wednesday (February 1) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill was the star of the match with his unbeaten 126 runs, which powered India to a massive 234/4.
The bowlers then did the rest of the job, with Pandya scalping four wickets, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, and Shivam Mavi taking up two to bundle out the visitors for 66 runs.
Gill also surpassed Virat Kohli’s highest score in T20Is (122*). The 23-year-old became one of the five Indians to have slammed a ton in all three formats of the game.
India have also won the three-match ODI series 3-0. And now, their full focus will be on the upcoming four-match Test series against Pat Cummins-led Australia on home soil. The first Test will be played on February 9 in Nagpur.
